One dog was adopted on the spot at the first Rescues and Runways Fashion Show co-hosted by the Maurice's Department Store and the SOS Rescue volunteers and clients.

To donate 500,000 pounds of pet supplies to animal rescue shelters nationwide was the the goal set by the national community-based fashion retailer during September. More than 700 Maurice's stores in 44 states served as collection points for pet supplies to benefit a rescue shelter in their area.

The Enterprise store teamed with the SOS Rescue Shelter and last Saturday, they hosted the first Rescues and Runways Fashion Show to highlight animals available for adoption at the local shelter. One dog found a forever home after his runway appearance. During the month that Maurice's accepted donations for the shelter at the local store, 17 shelter dogs and nine cats also found homes.

Event organizer Bonnie Nadolny said people were encouraged to bring donations of pet supplies to their local Maurice's store during September. "Customers who brought in a donation received a coupon for 20 percent off one regular-priced item," Nadolny said. "Our campaign goal nationwide was to collect 500,000 pounds of supplies."

Nadolny said items collected for the SOS Shelter included Purina/Pedigree Pet Food, bleach, Pine-Sol, dish soap, laundry detergent, scoopable cat litter, latex gloves and 13-gallon garbage bags.

Area merchants donated items for a silent auction with proceeds benefiting the shelter. Participating were Beef O'Bradys, Milky Moos, Cupcakes Y'all, Club Sun, Firehouse Subs, Curves, Alabama Trophy, Ruby Tuesdays, Rituals Day Spa and Just Imagine.

Some limited edition "Friends for Life Charms," are still available at the Enterprise Maurice's store, Nadolny said. "Pet owners can wear half of the charm and the other half is worn by their pet." All proceeds from the $5 charm will benefit animal rescue, she added.

"The struggling economy is taking its toll on animal shelters everywhere," Nadolny said. "By shining the spotlight on these animals I know we can make a difference."

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and his wife Miyuki took part in a charity fashion show on Saturday afternoon, involving handicapped people and prominent figures. They appeared on stage with designer Kei Hamai at the end of the collection whose theme was "Everyone Is Original."
