FLINT, Michigan -- The air was filled with the scent of leather at the Bikes on the Bricks' first fashion show inside the University of Michigan-Flint's University Pavilion.

The fashion show added one more event to the third annual bike extravaganza that, according to police estimates, drew about 4,000 people each day to downtown Flint.

Models, women from Hooters and the men of the Flint Fire Department, dressed to the nines in leather, denim, skulls, helmets and chaps.

"The chaps were great, that was the best part of the show," said Leonard "JR" Thompson of Flint. It was the first fashion show he ever attended and he said he would definitely plan on going next year if the event returned.

"You see a lot of things that women can wear that look really cute," said model Jasmin Everson of Flint. "They can ride in them, too, not just sit on the back of a bike."

She and the other models walked the catwalk with duds from Forest Cycle Works, Cummings Harley-Davidson, Top End and Rocky's Motorcycle and Outdoor Supplies.

"I think it's really important that we promote our local businesses," said Paulla Schemm, who coordinated the fashion show.

Schemm, who is a biker herself, said that she loved seeing all the options for female bikers.

"Women have definitely taken to the streets ... it's refreshing," Schemm said.

Maurices at Central Mall is hosting a Rescues & Runways fashion show at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in front of the fountain at the mall.

The fashion show will feature models walking the runway wearing the latest fall looks from Maurices. Representatives of the Salina Animal Shelter will be on hand to answer questions from people about adopting pets and volunteering at the shelter.

The Salina store is one of more than 700 Maurices stores in 44 states that will host pet-themed fashion shows in September and sponsor pet supply drives to support their local shelters.

April Torske, Salina's Maurices manager, said people are welcome to bring donations of pet supplies to the store. Anyone who drops off a donation of cash or pet supplies for the Salina Animal Shelter during the month of September will receive a coupon for 20 percent off one regular priced item.

Maurices also is introducing a limited edition Friends for Life Charm. The Friends for Life charm is $5 and will be sold through Oct. 31. For every charm purchased, $2.50 will go to support the ASPCA and its national shelter outreach program.
