The Ducks held their Lady Ducks Fashion Show in Newport Beach on Friday.

Spoiler alert: Coach Randy Carlyle dresses down Corey Perry and Saku Koivu pulls off the man purse.  But most important is that the Ducks raised money to benefit Children's Hospital of Orange County in this report by Tanya Lyon.

bobbyandwhitney2Eight of the Ducks' nine Olympians were on hand to auction off their Olympic jerseys.

Ryan Whitney and Bobby Ryan (right) showed off the Team USA sweaters, while Scott Niedermayer, Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf of Team Canada, Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne of Finland, Whitney and Ryan, and Jonas Hiller of Switzerland all took the stage together (below).

Psychology senior Jessica Haag takes the "runway" last Friday evening in the Presidio Room of the SUMC in a tryout for an annual fashion show. The Barbizon Modeling Agency is deciding which models to use in the National Society of Black Engineers hosted Fashion Show and Concert this coming March 7th, 2010.

Students strutted their stuff on Friday hoping to be a part of the National Society for Black Engineers' Semi-Annual Spring Fashion Show and Concert.

Tryouts were held by the Barbizon modeling agency. Barbizon will help coordinate the fashion show and offer expertise.

The event took place for the first time last semester.

"I thought it was really well put on, so I wanted to be a part of it," said Shannon McKinley, an engineering junior and one of the aspiring models.

"It is a really great way to show your support for the local NSBE (National Society for Black Engineers) and a great opportunity for a career in runway shows and modeling," said Kristy Benson, one of the Barbizon modeling instructors.

"I really had a good time," said Jessaca Haag, a psychology senior who had been in the fall show.

Haag does local modeling for a boutique called Rockin' Queen, but said this was the first time she had worked with a modeling agency.

"They taught us different walks and different poses," Haag said. "I learned a lot from doing it last time."

The show is raising money for NSBE to attend the national convention in Toronto on March 31.

The event will have a diverse group of 20 models, both male and female, and include a fashion show, a raffle and a concert. The show will include DJ Unknown and DJs from Hot 98.3. Pricing will be around $10 or $15 depending on the talent the club is able to book.

Dillard's is providing the clothing and the makeup for the fashion show.

Each model will wear two outfits and receive a discount on the clothing they model.

The Sigma Delta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. hosted their 17th annual Black Heritage Fashion Show in the MU Ballroom Saturday at 5 p.m. The fashion show's theme, "Think Pink, Live Green," encouraged students and the OSU community to recycle and become environmentally conscious and friendly.

The fashion show, whose proceeds went to Women Who Win and CARE for Haiti, gave students an opportunity to learn about sustainability while experiencing a piece of black heritage. The show is one of the first events to kick off Black History Month and included a scene in which models strutted down the runway showing off traditional and modern African wear.

"It's an easy way to give back to the community and to teach students," said Alpha Kappa Alpha President Brittany Joseph, a senior in human development and family science.

"We want to show people that fashion isn't just about expensive clothes. It can be used to teach people things, and it doesn't always have to come from a top designer," Joseph said.

The Sigma Delta chapter is made up of both OSU and UO students and, naturally, the fashion show played on the Civil War. Models walked the runway in OSU and UO athletic attire that had the crowd cheering and jeering.

"It was really fun," said model and OSU student Affiongma Udosenata, a senior in general science. "I think it's a great way to inform students about Black History Month as well as other issues."

Alpha Kappa Alpha announced halfway through their show that they would show their support for the disaster in Haiti by donating half their proceeds from the show. Pink baskets were passed around to the crowd in which students and community members alike donated to victims of Haiti.

"The great thing about this show is that it simultaneously offered us fun and entertainment at the same time that we were learning about environmental issues and recycling," said Sarah Ing, a senior in English.

Alpha Kappa Alpha stressed to their crowd that they themselves were taking the initiative to become green and that students should follow their lead. They offered a presentation that outlined easy ways students could help the environment and shed light on some of OSU's environmental accomplishments.

"Overall, I thought it was a really smart and fun show," Ing said.
