Second Annual Breast Cancer Survivor Fashion Show is a celebration of survival (WJHG Panama City) Posted: 07 Oct 2009 07:25 AM PDT Panama City- While most fashion shows are about designer clothing and the hottest trends, the one held at the Visual Arts Center in Panama City Tuesday night was a celebration of survival. For the 18 local women who took park in the second annual Breast Cancer Survivor fashion show, thier walk down the catwalk was a victory march after winning their fight against breast cancer. The show was fundraiser for the American Cancer Society to buy gas cards for women who are still fighting the disease. Radiation therapy can be a 5 days a week ordeal, so help with gas can bring much needed relief. The night was also meant to help raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection in fighting the disease. Survivor Kerry Silha knows that first hand. "Self breast exams are very, very important. The percentage of women who discover the lump themselves is very, very high. Get immediate care, exercise, eat well, enjoy friends, laugh alot and love alot," said Silha. Organizer Kim Lydick, RN, works with cancer patients on a daily basis. "They are all inspiring, they give me hope and by how courageous they are on a daily basis. You know, they teach you to choose your battles, don't sweat the small stuff." Lydick says Tuesday night's event brought in more than $1,000... that's enought to provide at least 20 $50 gas cards. |
