Triangle - September 18, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) -- Pretty In Pink Foundation and the Women Business Owners Network (WBON) will host the Honoring You, a Fashion Show and Luncheon, on Wednesday, October 7th, to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to raise funds for the Pretty In Pink Foundation. The show and luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m., at the Matthews House, 317 W. Chatham Street, Cary.

The Fashion Show will feature 10 winter styles from Doncaster in Chapel Hill, modeled by WBON members and Pretty In Pink Foundation volunteers. Fashion authority Mary Michele Little of OneChicMama.com will emcee the show.

Pretty In Pink Foundation is the only not-for-profit organization in North Carolina that provides financial resources for uninsured and under-insured breast cancer patients with limited financial means, including the lack of health insurance. In a message to its membership, WBON noted the reasons why funds raised from the Fashion Show and Luncheon are so important:

One in 10 women is diagnosed with breast cancer each year and almost 20 percent of women in North Carolina are without health insurance.
Life-saving breast cancer treatment bills can total in the $100,000s.
Pretty in Pink Foundation, headquartered in Raleigh, provides access to quality of life support, education and life-saving resources to North Carolinians diagnosed with breast cancer, regardless of their ability to pay.

Those who attend the event can get involved in various ways besides the cost of a ticket, WBON notes. They can honor someone by sponsoring a Pink Balloon Display or Pink Flower Bouquet for the Show. (Both are $25 and can be purchased at www.wbon-cary.org.) They can also purchase raffle tickets for $5 to win a 50/50 Drawing in which 50 percent of the money raised through the raffle goes to Pretty In Pink. (Last years winner took home $2500.)

The cost for the luncheon is $20 for members and $30 for non-members who pre-register before Monday, October 5th at 12 noon.  Registration at the door is welcomed for $40.

Mall fashion show aims to give animals a better future (The Shelby Star)

Posted: 18 Sep 2009 08:51 AM PDT

SHELBY — Saturday's fashion show, presented by maurices at Cleveland Mall, meets the approval of three well-mannered canines, representing the Cleveland County Humane Society.

The dogs know that the day's festivities will bring donations of pet supplies and other items for their animal friends at the society's shelter and in homes where owners need help feeding the family pet.

"This is a fun way to bring attention to a very serious issue in our community," said maurices store manager Deedee Canipe. "The tough economy is forcing some families to surrender their pets to animal shelters, while at the same time leading to decreased financial support for shelters."

The unique Rescues and Runways show will feature models walking the runway with the latest fall looks from maurices.

"We're partnering with the Cleveland County Humane Society, so they'll be on hand to answer questions people have about adoption or volunteering at the shelter or to learn about other ways they can help," Canipe said.

Coordinating maurices "catwalk" will be Humane Society volunteer and area dance instructor Kelley Seagle, joined by Therapy Dog International's Cathy Robinson-Gill with her canine therapist, "McDuff," leading the team of canine "judges" for the fashion portion of the day's festivities.

maurices has launched Rescues and Runways nationwide to support local shelters and the animals they help. More than 700 stores in 44 states will host pet-themed fashion shows in September, partner with their local animal shelter, sponsor pet supply drives to support their local shelter and sell a special charm to benefit the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

While Canipe hopes people will stop by the fashion show to see the cute animals and the latest fashions, she also encourages them to bring a donation of pet supplies to the store during the month of September. Donations of canned and dry food, litter and toys are welcome.

"Anyone who drops off a donation for the local shelter during the month of September will receive a coupon for 20 percent off one regular-priced item," she said.

The Friends for Life charm is $5 and will be sold at maurices from mid-September through Oct. 31. For every charm purchased, $2.50 will go to support the ADPCA and its national shelter outreach program. The ASPCA will receive a minimum donation of $50,000 from maurices with an ultimate goal of raising more than $100,000.
