Deadline nears to buy tickets for fashion show at Eisenhower Center (Abilene Reflector-Chronicle)

Posted: 20 Sep 2009 05:07 AM PDT

Late Victorian fashion and social etiquette will take center stage at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum on Saturday, Sept. 26. A fashion show and tea will be held as part of the "Ike's Abilene, 1890 - 1910" series.

The fashion show by Vintage Fashions begins at 2 p.m. in the Library Courtyard. This one-of-a-kind collection will represent the years of 1890 through 1920. Models will show over 70 dresses with full accessories while the narrator weaves in stories of notable Dickinson county women of the era.

"We are thrilled to do this show in Abilene. These fashions have not been seen here in over 15 years," said  Jill Crist of Vintage Fashions. "This show is unique in the sense that most of the clothing from this era is only in museums on display. We're fortunate to have a working collection for hands-on use in educational programming such as this event."

Following the fashion show, Kirby House will cater a typical Victorian tea. A short program on Victorian tea parties and etiquette will be presented by Meta West.

"Afternoon teas would have been quite popular among affluent city ladies in Abilene and the surrounding areas during this era. Finger sandwiches and an array of pastries were often served along with hot tea. The taking of tea was meant to satisfy late afternoon hunger, but also provided socialization and a chance to converse with friends."

Tickets are $17 and should be purchased by Monday, Sept. 21. To purchase a ticket, mail a check payable to "Eisenhower Foundation," 200 SE 4th Street, Abilene, Kan. 67410.
