YANGON —

Well-known Japanese fashion designer Junko Koshino presented her collections in Yangon, Myanmar, on Sunday in a fashion show jointly hosted by the Japan Foundation and the Japanese Embassy in Myanmar. The show was part of the Mekong-Japan Exchange Year 2009 program and marked the first Japanese fashion show ever held in Myanmar.

About 1,000 people attended Koshino's show held in two parts on Sunday afternoon and evening at the historic Strand Hotel in Myanmar's largest city Yangon. A total of 21 models, including four Japanese models, showed off Koshino's designs on a catwalk before the Myanmar audience.

A first-time fashion show competition focusing on creative use of old clothes will take place at 5 p.m. today in the Wolf Room of the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center, 2040 Airport Drive.

The "Recycled, Reuse, Make It New" fashion show is an idea sparked by the young adults arts club, a program for creative young adults to get together and work with other artists in the Oneida community.

Participants in the fashion show were encouraged to take old clothes from their closets, garage sales or thrift shops, turning them into new pieces of fashion. They're vying for cash prizes between $20 and $300.

The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Oneida Tribe of Indians, the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Coca-Cola Fund.
